"There were a few ·guys I would

Cl)eever speaks three languages
and is one of the most articulate drivers in the Indy Racing League.
Though born in Phoenix, he was
- rni>;ed in Italy, where he dreamed of
racing at places like Monaco and
Monza, not Indianapolis.
"Formula One is the most intense
form of racing you'll ever find," .
Cheever said. "It's consuming. You
have no life. For 10 years. I didn 't
really know what I was doing. It
dawned on me when I stopped driving Fonnula Orie just how busy we
were all the time."
Cheever abandoned Formula One
following the 1989 season, coming
back 10 the United States to race Indy
cars. He spent six years in CART .
without winning. then mov~d 111 the
fledgling IRL in 1996 and formed his
own team.
" I finally understood the meaning
of team." Cheever said. "One thing
Formula One teaches you to be is
extremely egocentric. That's probably a mistake I made in my career,
not always working with the team,
thinking I could do it all myself. That
doesn't work."
Still, Cheever has his feisty
moments. Silting beside his crew
chief, Owen Snyder, he chuckled
when recalling their first meeting at
a testing session last year.
" I got into an argument with
Owen in the first five minutes,"
Cheever said. "If somebody else had
not been there to get between us, we
probably would have gonen into a fist

Boston is a wonderful, picturesque, if somewhat chilly. cit~. ·
There are many admirable buildings.
·and the subway system is unique.
Nearby sit those towers of learning,
MIT and Harvard.
·
Boston hosts' the Summer Nationals approximately every 10 years. ·
Today's deal was played during the
Life Master Pairs in 1970. How do
you think the play should go in four
hearts?
I don't agree with South's openiitg
bid, but that's what he did. And most
pairs were in four hearts . .
Sitting West wa., Bob Hamman,
now the top-ranked player in the
world. Probably with the idea oftrying to make declarer ruff early and·
often, Hamman led tlie diamond ecc.
, And when his partner. Mike
Lawrence. encouraged with the seven, Hamman played a second round. ·
Now Lawrence found . the only
defense, switching to the club jack.
.Declarer won with his ace, c8shed
the heart ace. gOt.a sneaky heart eight
pasl West, and continued with the
heart nine. After winning with his
king, Hamman retu.med his remain·
ing club, locking declarer in the dum·
my. Doing the best he could, South
called for dummy's spade qpeen.
There was good neYis '(the fibesse
won), and bad' news: Lawrence didn't cover with the 'king. South had
only one hope now: He played off the
club king, discording his remaining
low spade. However, Hamman ruffed
to defeat lhe contract.
Not long after this eveti Hamman
and Lawrence. along with te1U11·
mates Bobby Wolff, Jim Jacoby,
Bobby Goldman and Billy Eisenberg.
went on 10 win die Bermuda Bowl;
the first victory for the United State~
in that world championship since
1954.
