Q~e~ti~n: I've had a_sore lhroat'or at least six weeks. My doctor gave me
an anllb10t.'c but later dtscovered that my discomfort was. caused by a fungal
mfe~tton not a bacterial one. He said that what I had was called "thrush " and
later decided that !t was probably due to either taking the antibiotic ~ndlor
as an adverse ~eaction to an antidepressant I've been taking. I'm now laking
a
medtcauon for the thrush. I thought medicine was supposed to make
me better, not make me sick. Does this type of problem happen very often?
Answer: First, I need to explain a bit about thrush. This is a yeast infection of the mouth that is common in those who have a depressed immune
system ·· specitically infants, diabetics, those who are on chemotherapy for research .
capcer, and individuals with AIDS. It is quite uncommon in ·otherwise

I can't accurately tell' you if it was the antibiotics or the antidepressant at least once.

There is now some evidence that certain antidepressants, particularly

·
You asked if this type of problem happens very often. My only partly
tongue-incheek response: "You .bet your sore throat it does!" Remember,
medicine is not a perfect science. People vary. greatly in the way they
respond to various medications, and these differences are rarely predictable
before the fact. Illness develops as a consequence of side effects from med• ical or surgical treatment with sufficient regularity that we've coined a word
for this.phenomenon -· "iatrogenic:· ·
.
This word lite~lly means, ·:physician induced," but you don't have to be
· a physician to be responsible for this kind of illness. ~any people produce
.their own iatrogenic disorders with misuse of over.~he-counter medications.
That's one of the reasons these drugs have warning lallels.
Prescription medications _ofte~ have a much higher potential for producing an iatrogenic disorder. In fact, ttie potential for causing this type of side

. When you .are taking a medication. whether it is a prescription or nonPfi'Scription product, be sure to report any new symptoms you develop to
your doctor, Be awl!fe that iatrogenic illness is not uncommon and that it can
happen to you.

Bridge, as you know, Is full ol max·
ims - but you must handle them with
extreme care. One of the moat dan gerous. is: In no-trump, establish the
suit in which you ha\'e the greatest
number of cards between your hand
and the dummy.
· Here: How would you plan the play
in three no-trump after West has led a
low club? What if you were in si)t no'·
trump?
·
r-o.,rth'• sequence. Stayman followed
by the jump to three no-trump over
· South's two-heart rebid, showed game

having four spades himself, South
passed. ·

You must start by .calling for dummy's club king.' If you play lhe, three,

In lhree no-trump, though, when the
club king· wins, you have eight top
tricks: three spades, three hearts, one
diamond and one club. It would be sit·
ly to take the diamond finesse - playing on the suit in which you have the
greatest number of cards - at trick
two . M you can see, the finesse would
lase, and the defenders would take
fo~r club tricks to·defeat you.
First, try three rounds of hearts.
Are they 3·3? If so, there is your ninth
trick. If not, play off three rounds of
spade•. Has the jack dropped? If so,
you're home. IC not, try the diamond fi:
