Unbeaten Meigs to h9st River Valley in non-league fiQale ~
By DAVE HARRIS
Sentinel Con-esponderlt

speedster led the Raider· ground
attack with 12 carries for 96 yards.
Joining G1lmore in the backfield is 61, 185-pound senior Jay StQUt. Stout
carried 10 times for 19 yards in the
opener. l.B . Boso a 5-9, 161 -pound
sophomore also joins the mix for the
Raiders. Boso carried two times for
12 yards.
Calhng the signals for the Ra1ders
is 5-8, 165-pound senior Jeremiah
Triplett Triplett, a halfback last season, led the Raiders in rushing with
608 yards m 144 carries. In the game
against Lucasville, Triplett was four
for eight for 22 yards.
· Gilmore caught two passes for
mne yards. Boso added one for 10
and Stout one for three yards.
One of the strengths of the
Raiders is their size, as 11 of the
Ra1ders tip the scales past tiJ 200pound m~rk.
The Marauders, with their two
wins, are off to their best start since
the 1986 season when they went 100 for the 'year. They have dommated
the statistics against their two
SEOAL opponents.
The Marauders have racked up
629 total yards 1n their two games
while giving up 282. On the ground
Meigs has gained 418 yards in 90

The Meigs Marauders and the
River Valley Raiders will meet for
the fifth time in their short series Friday evening at Bob Roberts F1eld in
Pomeroy.
Merrill Triplen is entering his
third year as the head coach of the
Raiders, while M1ke Chancey· IS
entering his fifth season calling the
plays for Meigs.
Both teams have won a pair of
games each in the series. The Raiders
won the first two games, with Meigs
winning the last two including last
season's 18-0 win at Cheshire.
It will be the third straight game
for Meigs against a Southeastern
Ohio Athletic League opponent.
Meigs is 2--0 on the year, coming of
wins over Gallia Academy and
Athens. River Valley is is 0-1 on the
season. The Raiders dropped their
opener to Lucasville Valley 18-0 at
Lucasville. Last week's contest
between River Valley and Fairland
was canceled because of the teachers' strike in the Gallia County Local
School District.
In the loss to LucasVIlle Valley,
the Raiders rolled up 170 total yards,
most of that ( 148) on the ground.
·· Jimmy Gilmore a 5-8, 155-pound

attempts for an average of 4.6 yards·
a carry. Leading the Marauder
ground anack as usual is the one-two
punch of Matt Williams and Justin
Roush.
Williams a 6-2, 180-pound senior
tailback leads the way with 195
yards in 41 carries ( 4.8 yards a carry) and Roush a 5-10, 200-pound
sophomore fullback has carried 37
times for 178 yards (4:8). Junior
wingback Jeremiah Bentley has
picked up 40 yards in nine carries. ·
One improvement in the Marauder offensive attack has been the play
of senior quarterback Brad Davenport. Davenport has completed nine
of 17 passes for 211 yards and one
touchdown. He failed to throw for
100 yards in any of the games last
season and he is already closing in on
his 1996 total of 393 yards.
·Davenport's favorite receivers
have been John Davidson with three
catches for IOS yards and one tOuchdown and Bentley with three catches for 70 yards. Chad Hanson has
added two catches for 24 yards. J.T.
Humphreys has pulled down one
pass for nine yards.
Senior hnebacker Jason Roush
leads the Marauder defense that has
hm.ited their opponents to just 3.3

Giants beat C~rdinals 7-6 in 10 innings

McGwire's homer gives him
consecutive 50-HR seasons
By ROB GLOSTER
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mark
McGwire claimed a spot alongside
Babe Ruth in major league history.
And he moved one step closer to
challenging one of baseball's most
hallowed records.
McGwire j01ned Ruth as the only
players with consecutive 50-homer
seasons by hitting a 446-foot shot
Wednesday as his St. LoUJs Cardmals
lost 7-6 to the San Francisco Giants
in 10 innings.
McGwire led on· the th1rd inning
with a drive down the left-Jield Ime
off Shawn Estes. It was McGwirc's
16th homer in 34 games since joining the Cardinals in a July 31 trade
from the Oakland Athletics.
"Any time you can have your
name associated with Babe Ruth, it's
n pretty awesome thing to think
about," McGwire said. " I'm blown
away. I think I'm son of in awe of
myself. I've surpassed anything I
ever expected to do in the game ofbaseball."
McGwire, who hit a major league-'
leading 52 homers for Oakland last
season, became the Jirst player w1th
back-to-back 50-homer seasons since
Ruth did it in 1927 and 1928. Ruth
also accomplished the feat in 1920

Cubs· notch 3-1 win over Reds
' ' in the division.

By JOE KAY

CINCINNATI (AP) - As his
troubled season winds down, Kevin
Tapani has tour reasons for optimism.
The right-hander has won his last
four starts for the Chicago Cubs, salvaging a season that started out
about as ·badly as it could. He went 7
1/3 innings Wednesday night to heat
the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 and take
another small step towards getting
back to normal.
"It's been kind of a roller-coaster
thing," said Tapani (6-3), limited to
10 starts because of linger surgery on
April 4. " I've still got things tti get
worked out.
·" I'm trying to get as much out of
this year as I can and next year go
back to being 100 percent again."
The Reds and Cubs know the feeling. Both expected to at least contend
in the weak NL Central. As the season winds down, they're the last two
teams in the standings, but playing
some of the most co11sistent baseball

Cincinnati li01shcd a 6-4 homesland that saw them waste chances to

" We just can't get over the 500

" We just have to start over on the
road, that's. all ."
The road has been a bad place all
year for the Cubs. They tonk 1wo of
three in Cincmnati to improve to 2250 away from Wrigley Field with I0
road games left. The dub "record for
road losses is 56 in 1956.
If the Cubs get the kind of pitching they had in Cincinnati, they have
a good chance ol av01ding that 56loss mark. Mark Clark shut the Reds
down in the opener and Tapani threw
seven shutout innmgs before Edd1e
Taubensec hit an RBI double in the
eighth.
· Overall, the right-hander gave up
live hits, struck out one and walked
three. He pitched out of threats '"
each or the tirstthree innings.
The most impressive part of
Tapan1's winnmg streak is that he has
put it together without hJS best pitch.

Eastern Eagles to take on
·Wahama in ·friday battle
By SCOTT WOLFE
Sentinel Corretpondent
On Friday night, the Wahama
White Falcons (2-0) will invade East
Shade Stadium to play the Eastern
Eagles (0·2) in a non-league varsity
football contest.
Eastern fell 27-0 to Symmes ValIcy last week. wh1le Wahama routed
Federal Hocking 27- 13.
David Mitchell ran for one touchdown and passed for twu more while
Tyson Rcitmire enjoyed his second
straight outstanding defensive outing. Federal, rebuilding after heavy
graduation losses last year, hung
d ose to the slightly bigger Falcons.
Mitchell took charge in the final
quarter of that win tu score on a 31yard run in addition '" tossing a 51 yard touchdown aerial to break open
a tight 14-7 game. Mitchell's effort
not only gave Wahama a bigger
lead, but swayed the momentum of
the game that had shifted agamst
them earlier.
Mitchell, the main gun Eastern has
to holster, ran for 51 yards and had

95 yards passing. He also intercepted a pass, in leading Wahama to 312
total yards offense. Interestingly
enough, the WHS· defense gave up
. 320 yards overall, 296 of which were
on the ground 10 Federal Hoc~ing:
Rcitmire had .nine tackles lor
WHS and had a pair of fumble
recoveries. Joe Finnicum and Bob
Kingery had seven and six stops
respectively. Wahama force four Federal fumbles . Ryan Russell also intercepted a pass ils FH had six
turnovers.
Not only will Eastern have to
watch Mitchell, but will have their
hands full with David Tennant, who
rushed for 102 yards on 19 curries ,
and Chris Roush (36 yards) and
Grant Huff (27 yurds) . Tennant had
a 25 yard touchdown carry. His 100yard night was his second straight of
the young season.
Keith Cundiff had 6~ yards
receivmg and a touchdown tor the
Bend Area club, while Russell had a
catch and a toudlduwn.
Eastern succumhcd to Symmes

MeG wire became the sixth player to reach 50 homers twice, joining
Ruth- who did it tour times- and
Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Willie
Mays and Ralph Kmer.
"I played with the great Hank
Aaron and played against guys like
Willie Mays and W1llie McCovey,
and they never accomplished it, "
G1ants manager Dusty Baker said of
McGwire '.s feat.
McGwirc spent his ent1re career in
Oakland before the trade to St. Louis.
The San Francisco crowd gave McGwire, who got the ball back from a
fan in exchange for two autographed
-bats, a standing ovation after the
homer.
"It was nice to do it here," MeGwire said. "! was born and raJSed a
major league baseball player across

Earnhardt's health dominates garage talk
IIJIIolltollllllto
NASCAA This Week
RICHMOND, Va. - Between
tbe Mountairl Dew Southern 500,
when Dale Earnhardt became
disoritnted and lwei to be taken
to a lix:al ha~pital , and Richmond'a Elide Batteries 500,
when he received a clean bill of
health, the day-to-day mlklition
of the seven-time Winston Cup
· champion dominated lhe week.
After checking out of the
McLeod Regional Medical Center in Aorence, S.C., Earnhardt

went to an undi!iclosed hospital
on Tuesday for further tests, and
althe time, his business mana~r
admitted the driver might not
compele a1 Richmorid at all.
According to Don Hawk. pies·
ident of Dale Eamtwdt Inc., the
46-year~Jd stock car racing leg·
end decided to have further tests
conducted based on h.i~ Darling·
ton episode. The location was
·undisclosed, Hawk said, because
Earnhardt did nol want to disrupt
the normal actlvhies of the hospital. Fans had flocked to McUod

on Sunday after Earnhardt
blacked oot during the first lap of
the South~m 500.
Some of the betiCr medical
minds in America had no clue
what went wrong with Earnhardt

11 Darlington Raceway, Dr.
Charles Branch Jr. admilled, and

they could find no reason to pre·

vent hls return to the track.
NASCAR cleared Earnhardt to
race based on Dr. Branch's m·
ommcndatiQn . Branch is a neurosurgeon at Wake Fores1 University's Bowman G~:ay School of

Dear NASCAR Race Fan,
Your question• are diffac:ult to
answer definitively. During the
era in question, woman sports·
writers were rare, but not nonex·
istenL As for motorsports. it is
pertinent to note that,, in the
South during lllis era, there were
several woman drivers, Louise:
Smith being lhc mo5t .wellknown. Certainly, as a sports·
writer assigned regular!)' to
motorsports coverage, you would
have been unique. Whether you
were the only female motorsports
writer of that era is almost impos· ·
sible to determine. Perhaps our
readers could help.

Dear NASCAR ThiS Week.,
As a NASCAR fan, I of1en
wooder if all the old super5 tilions
are still' as strong. I see the green
car, which was a real no-oo. Also,
women are allowed in the pits .
Both were off-limits.
After World War II, I was a
reporter for th e Rocky Mountain
News and was assigried to
Midget racing at the Lakeside
track, in Denver. However, I Willi
no1 allowed to be in the pits, in
the judges' stand or on the !Tack
tO reporl on an accident. After
many battles with the: driven and
management, I was finally
dee med to be qualified, bul only
from the grandstand.
After many more battle!!, I
finally was given more freedom,
and when the big cars buill their
own track, I was allowed to
report their races as well.
.'
Needless to say, I was a
woman. Was I ~he first woman
sportswriter? Wa.~ I the firs t
woman race reporter?

___,.;;..___Poet's Corner-''Praise God''
By Barbara James

God is Great
God is Good
We ddn't praise him, but
We should.
Let our voices sing songs
and insbUments play.
Music of love for our
God and Father.
Who will make right
all things that are vain and
selfish
For there are many wrongs.
·Lei us praise God wilh grace
• palicnce and love to our fellow
mc:n.
Our.Lord died for all mankind
To save us from the perils
of sin.
Ex1end praying hands
to glorify and praise him
in word and deed.
"About God's Word"

By.Barbara James

By Phillip Alder
Like most (all') people,I •uppose.
writers somelimes bend the truth
when il suits them . For example.
Charles Lamb, in ." Oxford in the
Vacation," wrote , "The red-letter
days now become, 10 all intents and
purposes, dead-teller days." No one
who has been in Oxford when the
university students are down (on
vacation) will wonder what's strange
about that. Yet Lamb wrote those
words in Cambridge.
This deal occurred in 1979 during
the annual battle between these two
universities. ,
Sitting South was Mall Ginsberg,
