Baseball fans celebrate
Ruth's .100th birthday

WASHINGTON (AP) -What
once looked like a big day for baseball instead became just another
episode of strike-watching.
On Babe Ruth's IOOtb birthday
Monday, fans found no reason to
celebrate. The strike was no closer
to being solved, President Clinton's
deadline for an agreement passed
without any progress , mediator
W.J. Usery did not present his plan
for a settlement and players med
another unfair labor pracnce charge
with the National Labor Relations
Boord.
Allin all, not exactly a banner
day for the old ball game.
"It's just a few hundred folks
trying to flgure out bow to divide
.nearly $2 billion," Clinton said,
summing up a popular sentiment.
"They ought to be able to figure
that out."
But with so mucb money at
stake, and the sides so far apart. it
didn't seem that easy.
"On this 100tb anniversary of
Babe Ruth's birth, the Babe would
not be enormously optimistic for

any quick settlement right now,"
Lalla' Secretary Robert Reicb said.
Clinton's deadline of 5 p.m.
EST fOI' an agreement passed without Usery presenting his terms for a
solution. Usery said his recommendations would be ready at 3 p.m.
today.
"We simply ran out of time,"
Usery said.
Usery tried his best to be upbeat,
despite bouncing back and forth
from the White House to the
Mayflower Hotel, where talks were
definitely not taking place.
''I refuse to be pessimisti.c ,
although it is very difficult to seem
to find a voluntary agreement
between the parties," be said.
No matter what he did, Usery
could not persuade players and
owners to meet with each other.
They did not speak for the second
straight day, even after Clinton
ordered them to try to solve the dispute themselves.
Today, according union bead
Donald Fehr, Usery hoped to give
suggestion~ to both sides about

Usery's plan. The president could
Jl'Opose special legislation to enact
terms of a settlement or binding
arbitration, but both types of bills
would have to be approved by the
House and Senate.
·
"We detect among plaDy members of Congress a desire to see
baseball get back on the boards for
1995," White House spokesman
Mike McCurry said.
But Rep. John Boehner, an Ohio
congressman who chairs the House
Republican caucus, said be did not
think Congress "ought to involve
ourselves in this lahB" dispute.' '
"I think disputes between labor
and 'management ought to be
resolved between labor and management," Boehner said.
Tbe players, many of whom
have lobbied for a week on Capitol
Hit), wanted to malt:e sure their
message got to Clinton. So pitcher
Scott Sanderson band-wrote a twopage. letter that about a 12_ dozen
players signed, and bad Usety take
it to the president.
-

bow they might resolve their differences. Later, Usery planned to lake
his proposal to tbe president. .
"Essentially, we're in a p,c;riod
of time where we're waiting,' Fehr
said.

.

Usery met separately with eacll
side after returning rrom the White
House. Though be bas been staying
up until the early-morning hours
for a week while trying to get a
deal, Usery turned in well before
midnight.
" We'·ll wait and see what system Bill recommends," Atlanta
Braves president Stan Kasten said.
"We're hoping it's something we
can work with."
"Obviously; any ·delay jeopardizes spring training," he said.
As things stood, there seemed
little chance of opening camps Feb.
16 with regular major leaguers .
Still, owners plan to begin having
pitchers and catchers report that
day, even if it means using strikebreakers.
It was uncertain what Clinton
would do if tbe sides rejected

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)
- Marshall coach Billy Donovan
was not happy despite the Thundering Herd's 73-65 win over Western
Carolina, which became a
turnover-fest,
"Thai was probably one of the
most frusuating games I've ever
been associated with offensively,"
DonovWJ said Monday.
Marshall, jumping to 12-8 overall Wid 4-4 in the Southern Conference, had 10 turnovers, eight in the
first balf, while Western Carolina,
which is now 9-10 overall and 5-3
in the conference, turned the ball
over 20 times, with 13 alone in flrst
half.
Western Carolina led 31-26 at
halftime, but that was no consolation to .Western Carolina coach
Benny Dees.
"I knew we were .in trouble
. wl'ien Marshall only sbol 20 percent in the rtrst half and we were ·
only up by flve points," Dees said.

new foliage shoots from lhe multibranch creeping root system. Plants
obtain a beigbt of 12 to l8.inches.

The indeterminate growth produces
numerous clusters of. flowers on
long staiics fi'OIJl June until September. Each cluster of flowers produce a group of finger like pods,
containing one to many seeds.

Crown vetch cbokes out weeds,

resists drought, disease and insects.
Proper ground preparation is
essential for a successful start. Prepare a ftrm seedbed and wort to a
