F.D.R., in~ ~essage to' Congress in
1936, said, "We have earned the hatred ol entrenched greed."
Well, at the bridge table, players
lose contracts because or greed for
overtricks. But I would say that " hatred" is a distinCt overbid ollheir part·
ners' reactions. Considerable ire, per·
haps, but 'hatred, no.
· In today's deal, how should South
plan the play in lour hearts, West having led the club two'
One small point about the auction.
. North 's raise to two hearts does not
guarantee lour-card support. So normally South shouldn 'I jump to game

lour were the club lour. South should
rebid three no-trump, leaving it to
North to correct to lour hearts with
lour trumps.
West might have led the spade lour
lnot that it defeats the contract), but
he opted lor the club two. Anticipating
a lead away !rom the king, South
played low !rom the dummy. However,
disaster struck. East won with the
king and promptly. switched to the
spade queen. Now declarer couldn't
avoid losing lour tricks : two spades,
one diamond and one club.
If South had only won the first trick

with dummy's club ace, he would have

drives out the diamond ace. The de·

spades, but it istoo lat~eclarer gets

AA1> TO 1-\II!:E.~ I.AioNER!
Be lore playing !rom the dummy,
check' not only your winners bul also
your losers. And don't.take a finesse
that risks a laydown contract. a'he 30·
point overtrick is chicken reed when
compared to a game bonus.
