The Generali Two Worlds Trophy,
held at the Villaggio del Bridge in llaly
last Augus~ was as much a social suc·
cess as a bridge success. The 16 players and 10 or so journalists brought
along, as appropriate, their wives, children -and girtlriends. There was a most
enjoyable day out, the main attraction
of which WJS a cruise up and do~m the
beautiful coast o!the Gul!of Policastro.
However, the festivities didn't seem
· to diminish the participants' determi,, nation to play welL Today's deal won
the award for the best-played hand of
th~ tournament. It was declared by
Ge1r Helgemo, the young Norwegian
who is being slated as the next super·
star of bridge.
East's two-diamond opening pur·
ported to be a weak two-bid. Perhaps
he did have too much wine <or sun>
out on the high seas!
Against lour hearl3, West led the di·
amoml !!ing am! awitm~ \Q a trump.
Helgemo won in hand and led his club,
West grabbing his ace and returning
another trump .
South seemed to have only nine
tr1cks, but Helgemo found an ingenious way to develop a lOth. He won
trick lour in the dummy, cashed the
club king, discarding a diamond, and
ruffed a club in hand. He continued
wilh the spade ~ce and a spade ruff Jn
the dummy. Now came the club jack.
When East ·produced the queen, declarer didn't ruff. Instead, he discard·
ed his last diamond.
East was endplayed, having only di·
amonds left. He tried a low one, but
Helgemo calmly discarded a spade.
Declarer's 10 tricks were one spade,
two hearts, one diamond, one club,
two spade ruffs in the dummy and
three minor-suit ruffs in hand.
