Art Hess, 86, of Middleport passed away on October 26, 2022. He was born September 4, 1936, son of the late Arthur H. and Elsie Gilkey Hess. Art was a graduate of Middleport High School, class of 1955. On June 8, 1958, he married Jane Drummond Hess.
Art Hess
He retired from Kaiser Aluminum after working 32 years in the Casting Department. In retirement, he worked at the Ohio Valley Christian Assembly for 12 years as a groundskeeper. Art was a lifelong member of the Middleport Church of Christ where he had served as both Deacon and Elder. He was a 50+ year member of the Middleport Masonic Lodge # 363. Art was known as ” Papaw ” to his grandchildren and great – grandchildren, who brought so much joy to his life. Art was an outdoorsman and possessed a natural love of nature because it was there that he felt closer to God. He was an avid hunter his entire life and loved to talk about his hunting adventures as he grew older. Art was a handy man: he could fix most everything and could build most anything. And whatever parts he needed, he could likely find in his treasure stash or would barter with one of his friends.
Besides his parents, Art was preceded in death by two half – sisters, Gwen Baker and Virginia Hartenbach, nephews Kip Hartenbach, Brian Drummond, and Derek Jensen; great – nephew Phillip Hopkins; brother and sister – in – law, Harold and June Drummond; and brothers – in – law Joe Drummond and Al Jensen.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Jane; daughters Christi (Vance) Van Meter, Middleport, OH; Cathy (Kevin) King, Erie, CO; Grandchildren: Josh (Taylor) Lynch, Athens, OH; Chelsea (Ben) Tarrier, Plain City, OH; Evan (Leah) King, Brighton, CO; and Chloe King, Erie, CO; and step-grandson Jaime Aguirre, Kansas City, MO. Great – Grandchildren include Hadley, Landry, Harper, & Declan Lynch; Darren, Abbey, & Bode Tarrier; and Levi King. Sisters – in – law: Joyce (Vic) Jensen Brody, Kingston, TN; and Cynthia Drummond, Hilliard, OH. He was blessed with several nieces, nephews and cousins who also survive.
Many thanks to the Darst Home and Ohio Health Hospice for their kindness and care during Art’s final days.
Art’s celebration of life service will be at the Middleport Church of Christ on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 12 p.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations made to the Middleport Church of Christ, 437 Main St, Middleport, OH 45760, to benefit their Free Community Dinners program.
