Text

Joanne T. Vaughan was called home on November 9th, 2023 at age 89 after an extended illness. Joanne called Overbrook Rehabilitation Center in Middleport, Ohio home most recently. A special thanks to Belpre Landing, Love and Care, and Overbrook for caring for her over the 5 years.

Joanne was born January 24, 1934, to Chester and Ruth Marie Dagley Thorton in Springfield, Ohio. Her baby brother John Bernard whom she adored was born a year later. She recalled fine memories of her childhood and appreciated a good story. She graduated in the Class of 1954 from Pomeroy High School and was proud to be a Pomeroy Panther. Joanne enjoyed sewing and quilting. She taught many people to sew over her years and dedicated many hours to God’s Net to help the youth in Pomeroy. She continued to sew and donate many quilts to her favorite organizations such as the VFW Post 9053, Post 39 Pomeroy American Legion, and Meigs County 4-H. Her quilts raised thousands of dollars for youth and Veteran’s organizations. The last quilt she made was auctioned this year at the Meigs County Fair.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Ruth Marie Dagley Thorton; her brother, John Bernard; her two sisters, Emmogene Mercer and Elizabeth Trout; her infant daughter Dica Suzanne Milhoan, and husbands Wayne Milhoan, Jack Weyersmiller, Howard M. Lawrence Sr., and Robert Vaughan.

She is survived by daughter Patricia Perry of Minnesota, sons Howard M. Lawrence Jr. (Elizabeth) of Long Bottom, and Daniel A. Lawrence (Jamie) of Powell; and Grandchildren: Andrew J. Henderson (Jacqueline), Sarah Lawrence, Makayla and Matthew Lawrence. Great grandchildren: Estrella, Rainier, and River Henderson. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including special friend Gage Smith, and niece Penny Delong who cared for her at Overbrook.

Funeral visitation will be at Anderson McDaniel Funeral Home Pomeroy, Ohio on November 13, 2023, from 11 am to 1 pm with the funeral at 1 pm. Burial will follow at Sand Hill Cemetery in Long Bottom, Ohio. In place of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of choice in Joanne’s name with her favorite causes being Meigs County 4-H Endowment Fund, local churches, or Veteran groups (Post 39 Pomeroy American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Post 9053 Auxiliary).
