William Milton “Bill” Wood, 85 of Point Pleasant, passed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. He was born January 2nd, 1938, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, son of the late William L. and Olive V. (Medors) Wood. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara Jean (Lieving) Wood. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Emo, Lewis (Tudy), Ray, Donald, Bobby, Paul, Jimmy Lynn, Clarence, Jimmie, and sister, Sybil Ann Dennis.
Bill is survived by his children Shawn (Jeff) Detwiler, William Christopher (Lisa) Wood, and Amy (Jamie) Sisson. Also surviving are his grandchildren whom he adored: Amber Dawn McClanahan (Chris Zinn), Sarah (Scott) Fridenmaker, Samantha (Jim Fox) Kapp, Miranda (Luke) Lawrence, Ryan Alexander (Julie) Trent, William Scott Wood, Brett Ashley Sisson, James Sisson, and Luke Sisson. Bill's great-grandchildren, Tristan, Emma, and Jaden Autenrieth, Cameron and Ella Fridenmaker, and Francis Gene Kapp also brought him great joy. Another great-grandson is soon to arrive, Louis Richard Kapp; two sisters-in-law, Rebecca Wood and Judi Wood. Bill is also survived by special lifelong friends, Charles Wayne and Phyllis Garland as well as many nieces and nephews he loved.
Bill was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and the first commander of their Awana program. He was also a proud member of the Point Pleasant High School Class of 1957 football team. Bill served 43 years in the military, with most of his career working full time for the West Virginia National Guard, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was awarded the US Army Good Conduct Medal in 1957 and Army Achievement Award upon retirement, being cited for honesty, integrity, perseverance, and devotion to duty with high professional standards, resourcefulness, and outstanding ability.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Hershel Woody Williams Home Based Primary Care, Hubbard Hospice House of Charleston, and Holzer Medical Center. After the passing of his wife, he was provided with wonderful care by his great nieces, Darlene Wood, Tammy Dalton, Jessica Butler, and Jennifer Wood.
The funeral service for Bill will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 1100 Fourth Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio with Pastor Aaron Young officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, prior to the funeral service. His burial will follow in New Lone Oak Cemetery, Point Pleasant, West Virginia. There will be military honors given at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the West Virginia National Guard Foundation, 1703 Coonskin Dr., Charleston, WV 25311.
