Derry E. Adams, 96, born December 12, 1927 in Kanauga, Ohio, went to his heavenly home January 21, 2024.
He was the son of the late Tom and Nettie (Lawrence) Adams. Derry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was probably best known for being a longtime baseball coach.
Derry married Dottie Estes on October 16, 1954 in Greenup, Kentucky. They were married for over 50 years and raised three children who survive him, Llada Adams and Ted Adams from Gallipolis and Terry, Beth (Taylor) Adams of Williamsport, Ohio.
He attended Fairhaven United Methodist Church faithfully.
Derry graduated from Gallia Academy High School in 1945. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 20, 1946. He was discharged from the Army as a technician fifth grade in 1947.
After his service, he drove for Walker's Cab Company in Kanauga. Derry then became postmaster for Kanauga Post Office from September 1955 until he started work on December 7, 1957 at Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood, WV. He retired from the plant, renamed Century Aluminum, after 34 years in April 1992. Derry only missed one day in 34 years. He coached the Gallipolis Little League Yankees baseball team, as well as assisting with Pony league and Babe Ruth teams. Derry spent over 30 years coaching.
He was an avid sports fan and loved watching baseball on TV and listening to the play-by-play on radio. After coaching, Derry loved to watch his kids and grandkids play baseball, soccer, and football. He continued to go to games until the age of 95.
Derry is also survived by the following grandchildren: Adam Adams, Lauren Hudson of Gallipolis, Brooke (Andrew) Adams- Barone of Chillicothe, Ohio, Rachel Adams of Richmond, Virginia, Beau and Kelsey (Hill) Adams of Circleville, Ohio, and Taylor Adams of Williamsport, Ohio. Linda Borden and Lisa Ellis of Gallipolis.
Six great-grandchildren: Joclyn Fowle, Adam Adams Jr, Abel and Lillie Brumfield, and Reagan and Reese Adams. Dustin Wamsley, Owen and Ryan White, Trentin, and Haylee and Hayden Waller. Sister in-law, Charlotte Adams of Alliance, Ohio; nieces, Joanne Ross and son Mark Ross and Linda and Kathleen Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Dottie; sister, Bonita; brother, Jack; and several others.
The funeral service for Derry will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Holman officiating. Friends and family may call prior to the service from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment with a military service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Ohio Valley Memory Gardens Chapel of Hope Mausoleum.
