Larry E. Grueser, 83, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024, with his family and friends by his side. He was born in Pomeroy, Ohio on April 18, 1941. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Doris Grueser and his sister, Marilyn Quinn. Surviving family members include his brother Bob and wife Nancy of South Carolina, nieces Kimberly Bernard of Florida and Cindy Quinn (Marshal) of Pickerington, nephews Todd Grueser (Monique) of New Albany and Pat Quinn (Linda) of Zanesville and a close first cousin, Tracie Stemen of Sidney. There were many other great nieces and nephews that he loved. Larry was especially grateful for the trips Todd made to see him along with his wife Monique and son Dalton. Kimberly always lifted Larry’s spirit with her encouraging and fun phone calls from Florida. Larry was a proud “Pomeroy Panther”, class of 1960. One of his best longtime friends and fellow graduate, Bob Davis, checked in on Larry regularly. Debbie Wolf visited Larry often and satisfied his sweet tooth with many sugary treats. The family cannot thank Debbie enough for her many visits, care, and love. Larry was especially proud of his service in the National Guard. The most memorable moment from that experience was when his unit was called for duty on the Silver Bridge disaster. Larry spent most of his life in Minersville, living in his childhood home for 79 years before moving to the Arbors of Pomeroy. He practiced Plumbing and Heating for over 45 years in the Meigs and Mason area. At times it seemed Larry knew everybody in town. He usually had nicknames for his many friends while his closest friends referred to him as “Chief.” He suffered a major stroke at age 50. Even with the stroke he continued to service his many customers for several years to the best of his ability. After retiring Larry became known as the “guy on the porch” waving at all who passed. Larry, a great brother and uncle, made many sacrifices over the years. He loved hosting the family Christmas dinner and 30 years prior to his move to the Arbors, he did just that. He spent hundreds of hours playing ball with his pesky younger brother. Larry was especially fond of his pets. One, a huge labrador named Max, achieved fame with front-page coverage in the Daily Sentinel for his frequent dips in the Ohio river. Once Max was swept downstream by floodwaters but was thankfully rescued. Two neighbors of Larry’s checked in on him nearly every day while he lived at home. Jim Essick and Nathan Robinette played significant roles in helping Larry remain in his home much longer than would have been anticipated. The family is so extremely thankful to them. The family would like to say special thanks to the staff of The Arbors of Pomeroy (too many to mention) who gave Larry wonderful care and genuinely loved him, and he loved them in return. He was always very positive about his treatment. They did what they could to make him comfortable under some difficult circumstances. Larry did what few do and had willed his body to the Ohio University Medical School. The family would also like to thank Shriver Hospice for their loving care. Becky Funk and Chaplain Don Harris were especially caring with his singing of hymns. Larry loved his singing and accepted Jesus as his savior. That was a great moment! He will be missed but we are assured he is now resting in a better place. Anderson McDaniel Funeral Home will host calling hours on Thursday, June 6, from 5-6:30 followed by a memorial service at 6:30.
