James W. Johnson, 82, of Pomeroy Ohio, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 13, 1941, in Geauga Lake, Ohio, the son of Joseph Johnson and Helen Lambert Johnson
James was 1959 graduate of Pomeroy High School. As a teenager he began working with his father as a brick layer and later made a career of it as a mason. He started his own company James Johnson Construction in 1978. He worked many years with his son Todd at his side and was a member of the Bricklayers Local 23 for 61 years.
He proudly served in United States army from 1960-1962 and then continued his service in the U.S army reserves until 1966. Jim is a lifetime, honorary member of the 2nd Reconnaissance Squadron, 7th United States Calvary for his border patrol service in East Germany.
Jim’s greatest accomplishment in life was the family he raised. He taught them love, respect, resiliency, loyalty, and most of all that if you want anything in life you have to work hard for it. His pride and joy in life was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They kept him young at heart with their contagious laughter and endless energy. They loved to make up new games and no matter his age, he never could resist joining in the backyard family shenanigans like kickball or whiffle ball when the family got together.
James is preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 63 years Zorra Jones Johnson; his father, Joseph Johnson; his mother, Helen Lambert Johnson; his brother Joseph Johnson; sister-in-law, Bobbi Batey; and brother in law Charlie Strayer.
He is survived by daughters Jamie Johnson, of Pomeroy, Ohio and Teresa (Paul) Collins, of Reedsville, Ohio; son Gregory Todd Johnson, of Pomeroy, Ohio; brothers Ray (Betty) Johnson, of Deland, Fla., Larry (Gloria) Johnson, of Rutland, Ohio, and Kenny Johnson, of Pomeroy, Ohio; sister Beverly ( Richard) Fetty, of Langsville, Ohio. Sisters- in-law Lois Strayer, of Covington, Ohio, Jane Jones, of New Haven, WV., Bonnie (Jeff) Mankin, of New Haven, WV brother-inl-aw, Johnnie (Cindy) Jones, of West Palm Beach, FL ; grandchildren Missy( Aaron) Vickers, James Myke Davis, Joshua (Lydia) Collins, Samuel Collins, Felicia See, Morgan Johnson, and Jamee Johnson; great grandchildren Emi Vickers, Lyla Collins, Winnie Collins, Riley Collins, McKenzie Wamsley, Kazden Lamoine, Gunner Reynolds, Remy Reynolds, Bella Reynolds, Hazel Reynolds and Riley Reynolds; many special nieces and nephews and very close lifelong friends.
Following Jim’s wishes there will be no service. The family would like to thank Holzer hospice nurses Jane and Victoria for all of their help allowing the family to fulfill Jim’s wish of being comfortable at home.
