John W. Milhoan, 84, of Gallipolis, Ohio passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023 at his residence. John was born on July 29, 1938 in Charleston, West Virginia, son of the late Dr. A. W. Milhoan and Alma Tawney Milhoan.

John was an educator at Gallia Academy High School from 1961-1991 where he taught Geography and American History. He also coached basketball from the 7th grade to varsity teams from 1961-1971; he coached the golf team from 1963-1991 where his teams won eleven S.E.O.A.L golf championships, eight district titles, and went to the state golf tournament eight times. He was the "winningest" golf coach in Ohio history with 1,080 wins and 480 losses. John was the first coach inducted into the Ohio Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983. He coached tennis from 1980-1985 and officiated basketball from 1967-1990. John was a graduate of G.A.H.S. Class of 1956 where he excelled in basketball, set many school records, and was voted into their Hall of Fame in 2002. His jersey number 38 was retired and hung in the gym in 2016. Also in 2016, John was G.A.H.S. Alumnus of the Year. John is to be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on June 10th, 2023.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Marshall University. While at Marshall, John excelled in basketball and was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. John was a former president of the Gallia County Teachers Organization and was president of the Ohio Retired Teachers Organization in 2002-2003. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Gallipolis.

John was raised by Harold "Doc" and Beulah Haskins, growing up on farm where he practiced basketball on a basket hung on a barn door. He was raised with Anna Haskins Burke, Jean Haskins Martin, and Paul Haskins, who all preceded him in death. John married Jane Simms Milhoan on July 23, 1961 in Gallipolis, Ohio; and she survives him in Gallipolis. John is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for John will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Ray Kane and Pastor Christian Scott officiating. His burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Grace United Methodist Church from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Bill Wamsley, Jamie Lane, James Simms, Bob Simms, Dave Fooce, and Brent Simms.
