Shirley A. James Smith, 91, Albany, passed away Sunday March 5, 2023, at
Kimes Convalescent Center.
She was born June 19, 1931, in Athens, the daughter of the late
Mildred Jane Bumgarner James and William Thompson James Sr.
Shirley was a 1949 graduate of Athens High School, a member of
Albany Senior Citizens, Albany Seniors, Albany Methodist Church,
She and her late husband Jake operated S & J Grocery in Albany,
and Professional Auto Parts of Athens.
She is survived by children Donald Brian (Rita) Smith of Nelsonville,
Bruce Emerson (Christy) Smith, David Allen (April) Smith both of Albany;
grandchildren Jessica Smith, Jarrett Smith, and Jacob Smith;
great-grandchildren Wyatt, Lyle, O'Rion, Charlotte, and Dalton;
sisters-in-law Mary James and Genevia James; several nieces and
nephews she dearly loved them all. The family would like to thank
the staff of Kimes and Kimes Hospice for their wonderful care of Shirley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband Emerson Lyle "Jake" Smith, siblings Dorothy James Williams,
William James Jr., Donald James, Virginia James Mortz, David James,
and Blaine James.
Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home,
with Dr. Walt Goble officiating. Visitation is 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. time
of service. Burial will be in Athens Memorial Gardens.
