Roger L. Hood passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 6, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 12, 1935, son of the late Burhl Dye and Virginia Katherine Haskins Hood.
Roger was a proud 1953 graduate of Gallia Academy High School. After high school he graduated from Marshall University with a degree in Business Management and Marketing. While at Haskins Tanner, he served as President of the Retail Merchants and as Secretary/Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce. Roger proudly served stateside in the United State Army. Once honorably discharged, he returned to Gallipolis, Ohio to work at the beloved family business, Haskins Tanner Co., where he worked for forty years.
Roger married Carol Jean Fowler on October 16, 1960. He received so much joy from his children and grandchildren. His family includes Bob and Kem Hood of Gallipolis, grandson Marshall (Emma) Hood of Cincinnati, Barbara and Patrick O'Donnell of Gallipolis, Brenda and Rick McDaniel of Gallipolis, Ohio (Charity and Kristen of Taylors, SC), Brad and Cindy Hood and granddaughter Anna of Knoxville, Tennessee. He will be missed by many dear family and friends, including his longtime companion Donna Kay Sands of Gallipolis. Preceding him in death along with his parents and beloved bride are a few special relatives. These includes his uncles and aunts, Morris and Dorothy Haskins and Ralph and Virginia Hood; cousins Joe Woodrum and Carol Sue Haskins Wedge; his in-laws Marshall and Alma Stewart Fowler; sister-in-law Ruth Ann Fellure. He enjoyed many things; including playing golf frequently with his children and his golfing buddies. He had a group of dear friends with whom he and Carol Jean traveled extensively during retirement. Roger was a charter member of the Pit Crew, a group of men who regularly attended the Indy 500 Time Trials for many years.
Roger was a member of First Baptist Church since January 21, 1945 where he was proud to serve in many capacities. He served as Sunday School Superintendent under eight different pastors. He was also a deacon and was named Deacon Emeritus. Roger sang in the choir and in several men's quartets. He helped with the sound board and often served as an usher and as the church sexton.
The funeral service for Roger will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 1100 Fourth Avenue Gallipolis, Ohio, with Pastor Aaron Young and Dr. Fred Williams presiding. Entombment will follow in the Ohio Valley Memory Gardens Chapel of Hope Mausoleum. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Willis Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Military rites will be given by the Gallia County Funeral Detail at the cemetery,

Pallbearers will be Marshall Hood, Rick McDaniel, Charlie Corbin, Stewart Burrier-Corbin, Paul Burrier-Corbin, and Chip Brown; Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Danner, Marc Sarrett, Fred Williams, and Jerry Lucas.
