Amos Rice Curry, 89, of Venice, FL, joined his Lord and Savior peacefully on August 25, 2023 at home. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and step-father, treasured grandfather, and friend to many.

Amos was born on August 31, 1933 in Mingo County, WV as the sixth of ten children born to Billy and Cindy (Runyon) Curry. Having grown up on a farm, Amos joined the Army after high school and served in Europe. After his service, he returned to West Virginia and married Maxine Lawson. He quickly found work at the Kaiser Aluminum plant where he worked for many years. He and Maxine were blessed with one son, Greg “Cub” Curry. A football fanatic, Amos was an active booster of area athletics, especially at Ravenswood High School in West Virginia where he also helped create the youth football program. When “Cub” played high school and college football, Amos eagerly looked forward to every game. Amos later became a “snowbird” spending much of the year in Cortz, FL. Amos was a member of the North United Methodist Church located in Ravenswood.

After Maxine’s passing, Amos remarried to Jackie (Southall) Curry and the couple permanently settled in Florida.

Amos is survived by his wife, Jackie Curry of Venice, FL, son, Gregory (Jennifer) Curry of Frankford, WV, two granddaughters, Ali (Grant) Burton, of Bridgeport, WV and Taelor (Carlos) Lazo, of Lewisburg, WV, brothers-in-law, Gary (Rose) Lawson of Ravenswood, WV, and William (Barbara) Lawson of Chippewa Lake, OH. He is also survived by a nephew Kevin, and nieces Karyn, Leea, Lori, Lynn, Pam, and Vicki.

Additionally, he is survived by his step-daughters, Sherry (Chris) Simmons of Venice, FL, Theresa (Dean) Cain of McConnellsville, OH and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 65 years, Maxine; brothers, Johnny, Shando and Bill; and sisters, Ivory, Viccie, Isalea, Effie, Ethel and Ruth.

Services will be held at Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 1:00pm. Friends may visit, two hours prior to the service, 11:00am to 1:00pm. Burial will follow at the Ravenswood Cemetery, with full military graveside rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation in Amos’s memory to Ravenswood football. A memorial service at Heartis Assisted Living in Venice, FL to celebrate Amos’s life will take place at a later date.
