Mary Elizabeth Slavin, aged 60, died peacefully at home in Meigs County, Ohio on June 30, 2024. Mary was born in Pomeroy, Ohio on October 15, 1963 to parents Jackie Ray Slavin and Rita Lou Hinerman Slavin. Mary is preceded in death by her father. She is also preceded in death by her paternal grandmother Elizabeth Slavin and her maternal grandparents, Verne and Wilma Hinerman. She is survived by her mother, Rita Slavin, Syracuse, Ohio and her sister Shannon Slavin, Reedsville, Ohio. Also surviving are Mary’s Aunts and Uncles, Bob and Leah Jean Ord of Syracuse Ohio, Todd and Sue Hinerman of Logan Ohio, and Tene Barcroft of Hurricane, WV. Also remaining to celebrate the legacy of Mary are many cousins and special friends, including her best friend Linda (Pete) Norfolk of Cornwall, England and Mary’s two God-Children Joe (Joey Peanut) Norfolk and Evie (Evie Boo) Norfolk, both of Cornwall, England.
Mary graduated from Southern High School in 1981 and obtained her bachelor’s degree in special education from Ohio University. She spent her entire successful career as an educator in Florida. Mary loved educating and helping her “babies”, as she called the countless children she served. The wealth of knowledge needed to be such a fierce advocate for the children was evident in every action she took. Mary loved her students, and they loved her in return.
Mary grew up in Syracuse in the Rustic Hills neighborhood, where she formed lasting bonds and friendships. She often talked about the idyllic childhood there. Mary also loved the countless days of summer fun with her cousins, and may have even renamed herself “Mary Beth Slavin Ord” after spending so much time with the Ord family.
Outside of work, Mary was a Parrothead and a huge Buckeye Football fan. She attended 22 Jimmy Buffet concerts and loved being part of the flip-flop nation. Any given Saturday in the fall, you could find Mary glued to the TV watching College Game Day and her beloved Buckeyes. She was always all in on Buffet tailgates and Buckeye tailgates, with both of those being some of her favorite activities. Mary was able to check a huge one off her bucket list by attending the Ohio State v Michigan game at the Shoe in November 2022.
Mary had many other favorite activities too. She loved to spend time with her family and friends attending concerts, traveling, finding new food adventures, playing trivia, and going to the beach…those waves called her name. To know Mary was to be in awe of her. She was a bright shining example of kindness and acceptance, always fighting for equal rights and treatment for all humans. Anyone who met Mary would be instantly charmed with her sparkling blue eyes, 1000-watt smile, and her wit. Mary never failed to wave to a baby or small child, always playing peek-a-boo or making faces. She was so very smart, and if you needed an obscure movie quote or song lyric, she was your girl.
For anyone who wants to have a stunning example of courage and grace, you need look no further than Mary. The way she handled the awful disease of cancer was unparalleled. She was always cheerful and full of humor. Mary was more concerned with the burden her illness placed on her loved ones, than she was for herself.
Please join us in celebrating an amazing human, daughter, sister, friend, family member.
