Text
John Wesley Moore Sr. left this earthly realm to enter the arms of Jesus on October 21, 2024, surrounded by love in his daughter’s home. Born on May 21, 1954, in Meigs County, John was a devoted father, grandfather, and servant of Christ whose life touched so many.
John was a graduate of Meigs High School, where he developed a strong work ethic that would define his life. His early years were spent at AEP Coal Mine #1 (later #31), where he eventually faced significant challenges, including an injury and subsequent rehabilitation and finally layoffs and closures of the mine. Demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination, John pursued his education further with several semesters at Ohio University and Hocking Technical College where he thoroughly enjoyed, possibly too much, being an adult student on campus. However, his ambition led John to follow in his father’s carpentry footsteps as a self-employed general contractor, specializing in building, roofing, and cabinetry. His craftsmanship was a source of pride, and he took great joy (and time) in transforming spaces into beautiful homes. Unfortunately, a forced retirement in 2017 marked the end of his professional journey, but his legacy of hard work and determination continues to inspire those who knew him. And the skills he taught his children will last their lifetime.
John was married to his beloved wife, Lenora Marie (Davis) Moore, from 1974 until her passing in 2008. Together, they built a life filled with love and raised four wonderful children who carry forward John's values and love for family: John W. Moore Jr. (Liz), Shilo Little (Adam), Aaron Moore (Elizabeth), and BillyJo Moore. John found immense joy in being a grandfather, and he leaves behind five beloved grandchildren, Austin and Morgain Little, Nikky and Hayley Moore, Oliver Moore and the newest great-grandchild Graylyn Little who brought endless happiness to his life. As well as, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and “adopted” kids from the teams at Eastern Local School that he loved and encouraged like his own.
He was also preceded in death by his father Donald Moore, mother Laura Jean Hoon, step-mother Betty Moore, sisters Dorothy Stevens, Debbie Johnson and her husband Jerry, and Mary Moore-Singh, brothers Thomas and Donald Moore, brother in-law John Davis, and one grandchild Kenton Donald Moore. He leaves behind a surviving step father James Hoon, sisters Paula Collins, Lora Wilson, sisters in-law Tricia Baer (Eddie), LeAnna Newsome, and surviving brothers Danny Russell (Leah “Janey”), Gerald Moore (Diane) and brothers in law Joe Davis (Laura), and Rahul Singh.
John was known for his big heart, unwavering faith, and telling everyone he met about his Savior. He touched the lives of many, always providing support and encouragement in times of need. He tried to use his carpentry and maintenance skills to bless others that may be in need as well and be the feet of Jesus. His life was not only filled with work as he loved hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking, volleyball, and would be known on a Saturday night to be found at, you guessed it, a skating rink even in these last years until the time his Nurse greatly advised against it.
A celebration of John's life will be held at Anderson McDaniel Funeral Home in Pomeroy on Saturday, October 26th at 11 AM with a visitation Friday evening from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests going to a church service on Sunday.
John Wesley Moore Sr. lived a life of service, hard work, and love for his family, but most of all a dedication to the Word and sharing the Gospel so all can be brought to the knowledge of salvation. Though he is no longer with us in body, our memories and adventures will forever remain in our hearts. We hope he enjoys Heaven and the reunion with his Savior, wife, and numerous loved ones, and brothers and sisters in Christ until we see him again one glorious day.
