Janet Cardwell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully and joined her Lord and Savior on August 31, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on September 27, 1947, daughter of the late John D. Waugh Sr. and Wanda V. Waugh.
Janet attended North Gallia High School and proudly graduated from Hannan Trace High School as part of the class of 1965. Her dedication to service was evident in her long career with the Gallia County Local School District, where she worked as both a bus driver and secretary, touching the lives of many students and families.
Janet also served as a Corrections Officer for the Gallia County Sheriff’s Department, was an active volunteer with the Gallia County Democratic Party, and was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Gallipolis.
Janet was a devoted mother to Sonya (Trevor) Small and Benny (Diane) Cardwell. She took great joy in her role as grandmother to Ciara (Cole) Spurlin, Andrew Small, and Braeden Cardwell.
She is survived by her sister, Wanda May (John) Fellure, and sister-in-law, Wanda K. Waugh. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John D. Waugh Jr., and her granddaughter, Madalyn Cardwell. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and her best friend, Darlene Garlic, who will all remember her with love and affection.
Janet’s warmth, generosity, and dedication will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
Visitation hours will be Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm. A memorial service celebrating Janet's life will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, beginning at 11:00am at Willis Funeral Home with graveside services following. She will be laid to rest at Mount Zion Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring her memory.
Pallbearers will be Benny Cardwell, Trevor Small, Andrew Small, Braeden Cardwell, Cole Spurlin, and Kelly Fellure.
Janet followed the Gallia Academy High School Golf Team and enjoyed watching them play their home tournaments at Cliffside. In lieu of flowers, friends may honor Janet by making donations directly to the Gallia Academy High School Golf Team.
