Margaret “Faye” Matteson Hamilton Wiggins, 92, of Racine, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2025, at The Laurels of Athens.
Faye was born February 28, 1933, in Puritan, Ohio, to the late Ralph Matteson and Helen Frazee Matteson Walton. She was a proud 1951 graduate of Wellston High School, along with her best friend Mary Tolbert. She never forgot that rivalry with Jackson High School.
Faye married Charles “Charlie” Hamilton on March 28, 1952. Faye and Charlie had two children, Brian David Hamilton and Sandra Jo “Sam” Hamilton Hawley. It was during the early years of their marriage that they moved from Wellston, Ohio, to Meigs County.
Faye worked at the Hercules Pants Factory in Wellston, Ohio, and later at RC Cola Bottling in Middleport, Ohio, where she was the bottle inspector, before staying home to care for her grandchildren, Sarah and Alex and great grandson, Braden.
After separating from her first husband, Faye married Kenneth “Kenny” Wiggins on June 15, 1984. Kenny preceded her in death on June 29, 2009, shortly after their 25th wedding anniversary. When she married Kenny, Faye gained an extended family in the Hits and Misses Softball girls. Faye and Kenny were known as the home for many stray cats and a few dogs over the years, including special cats Henry Gibson and Teaspoon and dog Dolly.
Faye is survived by her children, Brian Hamilton and Sam Hawley; sister, Roxie Matteson; grandchildren, Jessica (Eric) Carroll, Ashley Hamilton, Sarah Hawley and Alex (Olivia) Hawley; great-grandchildren, Braden, Alice and Hazel Hawley, all of whom loved spending time with “Nannie”. She also leaves behind her furry companion, Caddy, who never left her side at home or during visits to The Laurels.
She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Heather Walton Bradley, Erika “Nikki” Matteson Wolford, Dreama Bentz Ryan, Justin Jaynes and Travis Jaynes; sister-in-law, Donna Matteson; special friends, who were like family, Amy, Jess, Peyton and Griffin Lee, Rachel Bales, Sandy Swisher, Jennifer Arnold Lynch, and Rick Hauber.
Faye is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenny Wiggins; step-mother, MaryAnn Matterson; brothers, Tom Matteson and Paul “Buddy” Walton Jr.; daughter-in-law, Regina Hamilton; and sisters-in-law, Liz Walton and Mary Bentz.
Faye could often be found on the sidelines or in the stands at sporting events, school activities or any other events involving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Baseball was a particular favorite, with one coach stating that Faye was the only person allowed to yell at the umpires – something she may have done a time or two.
“Are you going to get a hit, or get hit” was one of her favorite things to ask before a ball game. Having spent the past 14 years watching Braden play ball, she became Nannie to many of his teammates and friends, and loved to watch her baseball boys play ball.
Never a fan of water, Faye would tell Sam “don’t get wet” when she would go kayaking, swimming or to the beach. Faye collected coffee mugs, and although she didn’t like to travel, has mugs from around the United States and a few foreign countries thanks to the travel of her kids and grandkids.
Faye loved to garden, work outside, and weedeat; she never saw a snake that didn’t end up dead after meeting her. Faye was a collector of pennies, something that required Kenny to reinforce the garage floor several years ago.
On Sunday mornings, you could always find Faye in her corner pew right inside the door at Forest Run Methodist Church, where she had been a member for many decades. Faye loved her church family and attended every Sunday. The annual church Halloween party was one of her favorite events, dressing up in costume well into her 80s.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Forest Run Methodist Church, 43712 Forest Run Road, Racine, with Rev. Wesley Thoene presiding. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the services, at the church. Faye will be buried next to Kenny at Gilmore Cemetery following the services.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meigs County Humane Society spay and neuter program or Forest Run Methodist Church.
